JAGUAR D-TYPE HISTORY

The Jaguar D-type debuted in 1954. While it looked like a progression of the C-type and had the proven XK engine, it was radically different in construction. Most   racing cars in those days had frames attached to their outer shells; the Malcolm Sayers designed D-Type body had a light tubular frame in front, holding the engine, transmission, and suspension, but the middle and rear parts of the car were of aircraft-type stressed-skin aluminum monocoque construction, for superior rigidity and light weight. The D-Type was fitted with the modern all disc brakes and sported powerful triple Weber carburetors. The D-type finished second to Ferrari in 1954, and was then dominant in 1955, 1956, and 1957. The 1954 car had a faired headrest behind the driver for comfort and some aerodynamic advantage. This was modified in 1955 with a large, unfaired fin and later with a faired fin-to-body (works car) for aerodynamic stability on the high-speed Mulsanne Straight at LeMans. The D-Types were timed at over 175 mph.  Le Mans winning original D-types today are worth about $6,000,000.00. at auction.
